VFA formed

The inaugural competition formed in 1877 was known as the Victorian Football Association (VFA).

The six foundation senior clubs were, Albert Park (South Melbourne), Carlton, Geelong, Hotham (North Melbourne), Melbourne, and St. Kilda.
